The 78th International Inferno Races from 20 - 23 January 2021 had to be cancelled. Due to Covid-19 and the associated restrictions on major events, the races cannot be held. A postponement is not planned. The entry fees already paid will be 100 per cent refunded.
 

What had become apparent in recent weeks is now a certainty: due to Covid-19 and the associated restrictions on major events, the 78th International Inferno Races cannot be held from 20 - 23 January 2021. The OC took the final decision at an extraordinary meeting on 4 December. "The Inferno Races could not be held in 1964 and 1990 due to lack of snow," Christoph Egger, OC President of the Inferno Races, looks back. "Now, for the first time, we are stopped by a pandemic. We regret the decision very much."

Postponement checked

A postponement of the races to the end of March or beginning of April 2021 has been intensively examined. However, it is too uncertain whether events on the scale of the Inferno races will be possible again by that time. In addition, the problem had to be considered that several long sections of the downhill run could be endangered by wet snow avalanches in the warmer spring months, which would force the races to be abandoned from midday onwards. The staging of the combined cross-country skiing on the village road in Mürren would also be in question at this late stage.

Entry fees fully refunded

The 78th International Inferno Races will now take place from 19 - 22 January 2022. Online registration will be open from June 2021.
